Environmental Impact of Geothermal Energy

Risks

Implementing geothermal energy carries risks such as sustainability risks, geothermal reservoir management and regulatory and social risks.

1- Sustainability:

Risk of the geothermal field not sustaining 16.5 MW for 25 years is low, estimated at less than 10%.

Mitigation Action:

  • Regular monitoring and maintenance

  • Advanced simulation and modeling

  • Diversified energy strategy

2- Geothermal Reservoir Management:

Managing geothermal reservoirs is challenging

due to the complex interactions of heat, water,

and chemicals, which could lead to reduced energy output or environmental risks.

Mitigation Action:

  • Utilize advanced geothermal reservoir simulation

  • Integrate real-time data collection systems

  • Establish a proactive reservoir management plan

3- Regulatory and Social Risks:

The geothermal plant will be near a popular visitor area, so there may be social risks such

as community concerns over environmental impact, noise, or potential disruption to the local landscape.

Mitigation Action:

  • Engage early with regulators and communitie

  • Monitor regulatory changes and social concerns

  • Communicate clearly and transparently to build trust with community

Issues

Implementing geothermal energy also carries some issues such as high upfront costs, regulatory compliance with required permits, and skill and workforce shortages

in geothermal expertise.

1- Mitigation Action:

Optimize drilling strategy

with detailed geological surveys; explore partnerships, financing, or subsidies

to reduce costs.

2- Mitigation Action:

Engage stakeholders through consultations and educational campaigns to build support

and address misconceptions.

3- Mitigation Action:

Invest in staff training, partner with universities, and recruit international experts to build local capacity.

1- High Upfront Costs:

High Priority

2- Stakeholder Engagement:

Medium Priority

3- Skill and Workforce Shortages in Geothermal Expertise:

Low Priority
